Heads Down, Thumbs Up!! Bad For Kids Self Esteem?
“Heads up, Thumbs down!” The teacher instructed and little Johnny excitedly did as he was instructed to do, throwing his head down over his arm and placing his hand up in a thumbs up position. He waited anxiously for someone to put his thumb down. He listened to the shuffle of the other kids’ shoes as they bypassed his desk and his thumb again and again, laughing as they put the other kids thumbs down. the more seconds pass, the more little Johnny’s hope at being chosen begin to drop. When the choosing is over, little Johnny lifts his head and looks around the class room. He feels strange as he looks around at the other kids who were still sitting and those who were standing.
He notices the weird quiet kid wasn’t picked, not surprising. But his eyes widen as he notices the smelly kid was indeed picked. What the hell?! No one picks the smelly kid. Johnny sits quietly as the other kids guess who picked them and then the next round starts.
Johnny doesn’t get his thumb put down for the next round or the one after that…
Johnny is sad now. Depressed maybe. He doesn’t understand why no one will simply put his thumb down. Was he the smelly weird kid too, but he just didn’t know it?
As a child i hated this fucking game. I especially hated when my thumb wasn’t chosen. I mean WTF? who invented this seven up game AKA heads down, thumbs up? I always felt sorry for the kid who was never chosen for one reason or another. I could literally see the sadness in their eyes when they lifted their heads because no one had chosen their thumb. Playing this game can cause serious psychological damage to a child. All the while you’re secretly thinking: does no one like me? Do i suck? Do i smell? I would always pick the sad kids who never got picked, and i would make it obvious that it was me who picked them, so that they could have their chance at making other kids feel inadequate. What i hated the most were the kids who would pretend to put your thumb down, where they only just touched it, but didn’t pick you. So when you stand up and guess it was them you look stupid because they didn’t really pick you…. Fuckers.
Fuck you Heads Down, Thumbs up game!
